UAE expresses condolences to Iraq over Karbala bridge collapse

KARBALA — The United Arab Emirates on Tuesday expressed solidarity with Iraq following the collapse of a bridge under construction in Karbala’s Husayniyah district.

In a statement, the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs conveyed “sincere condolences and solidarity with the Republic of Iraq over the victims of the bridge collapse.”

The ministry offered “heartfelt condolences and sympathy to the families of the victims in this painful affliction, and to the government and people of the brotherly Republic of Iraq,” and extended wishes for “a speedy recovery to all the injured.”

Parts of the bridge collapsed this week, injuring six people and crushing several cars in the Atiyshi area. Videos shared online showed large concrete spans collapsing as civil defense teams pulled victims from the rubble. The Karbala health department said three Syrians, two Afghans, and one Iraqi were hospitalized with stable conditions.

Iraq’s Parliament Speaker Mahmoud Al-Mashhadani ordered today the formation of a committee to investigate the collapse of the Karbala bridge.
