Iraq, Malaysia discuss expanding cooperation in Baghdad meeting
BAGHDAD — Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Fuad Hussein met with Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Regional and Rural Development Ahmad Zahid Hamidi in Baghdad on Saturday, Aug. 23, 2025, to discuss strengthening bilateral relations.
The meeting reviewed the history of ties between Iraq and Malaysia and their importance for the future. Both sides emphasized Iraq’s role in the region, particularly on political issues affecting Islamic countries.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Fuad Hussein received Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Regional and Rural Development Ahmad Zahid Hamidi in Baghdad on Saturday, Aug. 23, 2025.
The meeting reviewed the course of bilateral relations between Iraq and Malaysia, highlighting their historical depth and importance in both the present and future.
Both sides emphasized Iraq’s pivotal role in the region, particularly regarding political issues of concern to Islamic countries.
They stressed the need to activate the work of the joint committee between the two countries and to hold its meetings as soon as possible, describing it as the diplomatic framework that organizes bilateral relations, and discussed ways to enhance its role as a strategic avenue for cooperation.
The two officials also underscored the importance of coordination in international forums, especially on issues of shared concern, foremost among them the Palestinian cause.
Discussions also addressed ways to strengthen economic cooperation, increase Malaysian investment presence in Iraq, and explore opportunities for Malaysia to host more Iraqi students by providing necessary facilities.
At the conclusion of the meeting, Ahmad Zahid Hamidi extended an official invitation to Fuad Hussein to visit Malaysia in the near future. The minister welcomed the invitation, affirming his commitment to continuing consultations and further developing the framework of bilateral cooperation and the work of the joint committees.
