Erbil police investigate death of Salahaddin University professor found in her home

ERBIL — The body of Gulala Karim Aziz, a nursing professor at Salahaddin University, was discovered Thursday morning in her home in Erbil’s Zanko 99 neighborhood, according to local police, who said she had likely been dead for about a week.

The discovery was made after neighbors reported a strong odor coming from the house and noted that she had not been seen for several days.

“We hadn’t seen her in several days and noticed she hadn’t left or moved her car,” one neighbor told 964media. “When the smell got worse, we called the police.”

Police and forensic teams entered the residence and confirmed her death. The cause has not yet been officially determined.

Aziz, originally from Sulaymaniyah, had lived alone since the death of her husband, who was also a university professor, neighbors said.

Authorities said the investigation is ongoing.
