Al-Sudani and speaker of parliament discuss political cooperation ahead of 2025 elections

BAGHDAD — Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ Al-Sudani met Monday with Speaker of the Council of Representatives Mahmoud Al-Mashhadani to discuss Iraq’s political direction and preparations for the upcoming legislative elections.

According to a statement from the prime minister’s media office, the two officials emphasized “the importance of cooperation between the executive and legislative authorities to support the government’s efforts in completing the goals of its program, which serve the citizens, support economic and financial reform, and enhance the implementation of development plans.”

The meeting comes as political parties begin mobilizing for Iraq’s sixth parliamentary elections, scheduled for Nov. 11, 2025.

Statement from Al-Sudani’s office:

Prime Minister Mohammed S. Al-Sudani met today with the Speaker of the Council of Representatives, Mr. Mahmoud Al-Mashhadani.

The meeting discussed the general situation in the country and emphasized the importance of cooperation between the executive and legislative authorities to support the government’s efforts in completing the goals of its program, which serve the citizens, support economic and financial reform, and enhance the implementation of development plans.

The meeting also included a review of developments in the region and stressed the need for all political forces to unite in support of the government’s efforts to confront various challenges and strengthen the sustainability of Iraq’s security and stability.

The discussion also addressed the ongoing preparations for holding the legislative elections as scheduled in November, ensuring their success so that the results genuinely reflect the aspirations of the citizens and fulfill their hopes for greater stability and development.
