Duhok grape harvest begins with production expected to top 60,000 tons

DUHOK — Grape harvesting has begun in Duhok, with early estimates projecting a yield of more than 60,000 tons this season, according to the governorate’s agriculture director.

Ahmad Jamil, head of the Agriculture Directorate in Duhok, told 964media that the increase in production is due to improved vineyard care and favorable weather conditions. “We expect this year’s production to exceed 60,000 tons,” he said, noting that limited rainfall had no adverse impact on cultivation.

The governorate is known for its grape farming, with over 20,000 dunams (4,942 acres) planted annually. Farmers grow approximately 125 varieties, including locally known types such as Kemali, Halwani, Taifi, and both black and yellow grapes. The black grape variety remains the most in demand, selling for 2,500 to 3,000 Iraqi dinars ($1.70 to $2) per kilogram at the start of the season.

Jamil said the majority of this year’s crop is being harvested in the Doski area and that overall production is expected to exceed previous years. In 2023, Duhok produced around 40,000 tons of grapes, rising to nearly 60,000 tons last year.
