ERBIL — The Kurdistan Region’s Forestry and Environment Police announced that 124 people were arrested and nearly 870 fishing nets were seized during a fishing ban that lasted from March 20 to June 20.
In a statement released by the department, authorities detailed the results of their operations across the region. A total of 345 live fish and 1,028 kilograms of caught fish were confiscated. Enforcement teams also seized seven boats, 12 cars, and 12 motorcycles used in illegal fishing activities.
Weapons and illegal fishing equipment were also confiscated, including one Kalashnikov rifle with 26 rounds, two shotguns, 131 fishing spears, and 18 electric shock devices. Other items seized included four dynamite sticks, five nets used for night fishing, six wooden clubs, three electric generators, and one mobile phone.
Twenty legal cases were opened during the ban period. Authorities confirmed that some of the confiscated fish were later sold, generating 830,000 Iraqi dinars (approximately $588 USD).
The arrests come during a seasonal fishing ban declared by the Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources, in effect from March 10 to June 20, 2025. The ministry said the ban aims to protect aquatic life during the annual spawning season.
