Kurdistan Region enacts seasonal fishing ban to protect breeding season
ERBIL — The Kurdistan Region’s Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources announced a seasonal fishing ban that will take effect from March 10 to June 20.
In an official statement, the ministry said the General Directorate of Animal Resources and Veterinary Affairs has informed the agriculture directorates in Erbil, Sulaimani, Halabja, Raparin, Zakho, and Soran of the more-than-three-month ban.
The ministry’s decision states that “besides the complete ban during this period, fishing by electric shock, chemicals, explosives, and fine-mesh nets is prohibited year-round.”
Officials noted that the annual ban protects fish populations during their breeding season. The region, which boasts a network of rivers and dams, including the Great Zab, Little Zab, Dukan, and Darbandikhan, is a popular destination for both recreational and commercial fishing. These waterways not only contribute to the local economy and food supply but also support diverse aquatic habitats.
