Overnight stays banned in Goizha, Azmar mountains to prevent wildfires
SULAYMANIYAH — Local authorities have banned overnight stays in the Goizha and Azmar mountain areas in an effort to protect the region’s natural environment and prevent wildfires.
Overlooking the city of Sulaymaniyah, the Goizha and Azmar mountains are popular destinations known for their cool weather and scenic views. While many visitors stay late into the night to enjoy the area, previous incidents involving campfires have led to large blazes, destroying forested areas and raising environmental concerns — particularly during the dry summer season.
The Sulaymaniyah Forestry and Environment Directorate said individuals will no longer be allowed to remain in the mountain areas after 11 p.m. A joint committee formed with the district administration will enforce the new directive.
As part of the initial phase of the plan, authorities have also banned all campfires, which are considered a major risk to local vegetation and forest cover.
Awara Ahmed, head of the Sulaymaniyah Forestry and Environment Directorate, urged the public to support the initiative.
“Follow the guidelines and the plan that aim to protect the beautiful nature of Goizha and Sulaymaniyah,” he said during a press conference.
