Iraq to provide free diesel for private generators during summer months
BAGHDAD — Iraq’s Oil Products Distribution Company announced Tuesday that it will begin distributing free diesel fuel to private generator owners starting in June, following a Cabinet decision aimed at supporting electricity access during the high-demand summer period.
“In compliance with the Cabinet’s decision to provide kerosene fuel free of charge to generators, the company will begin distributing fuel starting next month,” said Hussein Talib, director of the Oil Products Distribution Company, in a statement to 964media.
Preparations are already underway to begin the distribution as rising temperatures are expected to strain the country’s aging power infrastructure.
Iraq has long faced shortages in national electricity supply, particularly during the summer when demand peaks. Frequent outages caused by limited generation capacity and outdated infrastructure have led many residents to rely on private generators to fill the gap. These diesel-powered generators are essential for maintaining cooling systems and other basic household functions during prolonged blackouts.
The Cabinet approved the diesel support plan on May 11, outlining specific rules for its implementation. Under the decision, each private generator will receive 45 liters of diesel per 1 KVA of generation capacity during the months of June, July, and August.
To qualify for the fuel, generator operators must provide at least 12 hours of electricity daily, alternating with the national power supply, with total daily access not falling below 20 hours.
