Iraqi FM meets Iranian counterpart, urges progress in US-Iran talks

NEWSROOM — Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein met with his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi on Monday in Tehran, reaffirming Baghdad’s commitment to strengthening bilateral ties and urging continued dialogue between Iran and the United States.

In a statement released by Iraq’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Hussein said Iraq’s relationship with Iran is “based on strong historical and geographical foundations,” and emphasized the need to deepen cooperation in the areas of security, economy, and energy.

He also described the ongoing indirect talks between Tehran and Washington as “a vital path to achieving stability in the region,” and called for the negotiations to produce “tangible outcomes.”

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Fuad Hussein held a bilateral meeting on Monday, May 19, 2025, with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, on the sidelines of his participation in the Tehran Dialogue Forum.

During the meeting, the two sides discussed prospects for developing bilateral cooperation between Iraq and Iran and ways to enhance regional stability, in addition to addressing a number of issues of mutual concern.

Fuad Hussein affirmed that Iraqi-Iranian relations are based on strong historical and geographical foundations, stressing Baghdad’s commitment to strengthening cooperation in the fields of security, economy, and energy, especially in light of the current regional challenges.

He also emphasized the importance of activating the work of joint committees between the two countries and addressed the impact of sanctions on Iranian gas supplies to Iraq.

In the same context, the minister reiterated Iraq’s support for the ongoing diplomatic track between Tehran and Washington, describing it as “a vital path to achieving stability in the region.” He noted that he discussed this issue during his recent visit to Washington, where he emphasized the need to translate negotiations into tangible outcomes that serve the interests of the region’s peoples.

For his part, Abbas Araghchi expressed appreciation for Iraq’s active participation in the Tehran Dialogue Forum, affirmed Iran’s readiness to continue nuclear negotiations with the United States, and praised Iraq’s role in creating a suitable environment for diplomacy.

The meeting also addressed developments in regional crises. Fuad Hussein stressed the importance of adopting comprehensive political solutions that ensure respect for state sovereignty and put an end to the humanitarian suffering in the region.
