‘We’ve kept horseback riding alive’: festival in Warte celebrates Kurdish equestrian tradition

SORAN — A horse racing festival was held Saturday in Warte subdistrict, part of Erbil’s Soran administration, featuring races, traditional Kurdish displays, and a dedicated equestrian arena near Mount Karokh.

The event, which ran from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., drew riders and spectators from across the region. Organized under the supervision of the Soran autonomous administration and the oversight of Warte’s subdistrict authorities, this year’s festival marked the third time it has been held with an expanded focus on horseback events.

In the natural landscape of Warte, 35 riders paraded their horses and participated in contests, attracting enthusiastic crowds. Participants described the event as a way to revive ancestral traditions and strengthen cultural identity.

Walid Najmaddin, a rider and member of the local Karokh Equestrian Group, told 964media, “This is the third time we’re holding this festival here. We’ve managed to keep the culture of horseback riding alive in the area. It’s important to revive this tradition among the youth.”

Najmaddin added that he had prepared his horse two days in advance for the event. “Horseback riding is very special and brings great satisfaction,” he said.

The festival also included displays of Kurdish folklore, highlighting the connection between the region’s cultural heritage and its equestrian history.
