'A real difference'
Chinese stone therapy gains popularity in Najaf’s Al-Mishkhab
NAJAF — A young practitioner in Al-Mishkhab is introducing a growing wellness trend to southern Iraq, offering therapy sessions that combine hot Chinese stones, cupping, and soothing music to help with stress, muscle pain, and sleep issues.
Murtadha Al-Mihna, owner of the alternative medicine center in central Al-Mishkhab, told 964media the method involves heating smooth Chinese stones in a special container and placing them on specific areas of the body. “The stones are an old treatment method I brought to the city to promote relaxation, treat sleep disorders, stimulate muscles, and expel toxins from the body,” he said.
“The stones are heated in a designated place and then applied to the body to transfer warmth,” he added. “The session is accompanied by music to reduce emotional tension and improve mood. After that, we begin the cupping session, which helps activate the body.”
Al-Mihna said most of his clients are athletes preparing for competitions or high school students facing final exams. “We’ve been able to help students in sixth grade reduce psychological pressure, which ease tension and help regulate sleep schedules,” he said.
The therapy sessions cost between 10,000 to 15,000 Iraqi dinars ($7 to $10.50), and the center has drawn visitors from Karbala, Baghdad, and central Najaf. Demand typically rises during sports tournaments and before national exams.
Aqil Al-Khamasi, an athlete and client at the center, told 964media the treatment helped him after years of physical tension. “I’m an athlete and have suffered for two years from nerve and muscle strain,” he said. “I turned to alternative medicine using Chinese stones and noticed a big difference — my body became more active. I had tried many medical treatments before, but none worked.”
Another athlete, Salam Sabah, said he turned to therapy after a weightlifting injury. “As an athlete, I tried many treatments for a slipped disc caused by a sports injury,” he told 964media. “I found that the most suitable method was using Chinese stones along with cupping.”
“I noticed a real difference,” he added. “Alternative medicine helped restore my physical and mental well-being. I shared the experience with friends and they welcomed the idea.”
