Al-Sudani congratulates Friedrich Merz on becoming German chancellor, calls for deeper ties

BAGHDAD — Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani congratulated Friedrich Merz on his election as Germany’s new chancellor on Wednesday, expressing optimism about advancing cooperation between the two countries.

In a statement issued by the prime minister’s media office, Al-Sudani extended “sincere wishes for Mr. Merz’s success in his new role,” and underscored the value of strengthening bilateral ties. “We look forward to continued progress in the relations between Iraq and Germany,” the statement read, emphasizing areas of economic, developmental, and cultural collaboration.

Friedrich Merz was elected as Germany’s chancellor on May 6.

Prime Minister Mohammed S. Al-Sudani sent a congratulatory cable today, Wednesday, to Mr. Friedrich Merz on his election as Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany.

The Prime Minister conveyed his sincere wishes for Mr. Merz’s success in his new role, and for continued progress in the cooperative and friendly relations between Iraq and Germany, across economic, developmental, and cultural domains.

In his message, Prime Minister Al-Sudani reaffirmed Iraq’s commitment to fostering deeper, results-oriented partnerships with Germany and all European Union countries. He underscored Iraq’s dedication to advancing strategic agreements that serve the shared interests of both nations and promote regional and global peace and stability.
