Viral outbreak continues
Iraq records 26 hemorrhagic fever cases, four deaths since start of 2025
BAGHDAD — The Iraqi Ministry of Health confirmed that cases of hemorrhagic fever have risen to 26 across the country since the beginning of the year, with the death toll now at four following a new fatality recorded in Kirkuk.
Health Ministry spokesperson Saif Al-Badr announced the updated figures during a press briefing on Thursday, stating, “The number of confirmed hemorrhagic fever cases has reached 26, and another death was recorded in Kirkuk, bringing the total to four deaths since the start of the year.”
Hemorrhagic fever is a viral infection transmitted through contact with infected animals or their meat, as well as through tick bites. The disease has become a recurring concern in Iraq, especially in agricultural regions where human-animal contact is frequent.
The the third fatality was confirmed in Muthanna governorate. Earlier in the month, Kirkuk recorded the first two deaths of the year — a 30-year-old butcher from Daquq district and a nurse — both of whom died after being treated at Kirkuk General Teaching Hospital.
