Iraq PM extends Easter greetings, affirms support for Christian community
BAGHDAD — Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani extended Easter greetings on Sunday to Christians in Iraq and abroad, reaffirming the government’s commitment to protecting the country’s religious and cultural diversity.
“We extend our heartfelt wishes to our Christian citizens, both in Iraq and abroad, on the occasion of the blessed Easter,” Al-Sudani said in a statement.
He called Iraq’s diversity a pillar of national identity and strength.
“On this occasion we reaffirm our unwavering commitment to protecting, supporting, and honoring the cherished diversity that enriches our beloved homeland — a source of strength and cultural and social vitality,” he said. “We wish all members of the esteemed Christian community continued health, safety, and peace.”
Al-Sudani’s message comes amid ongoing efforts to preserve Iraq’s Christian heritage and support communities facing decades of displacement and violence.
Iraq’s Christian population has fallen dramatically since 2003, dropping from an estimated 1.5 million to around 150,000 today. The decline is widely attributed to sectarian conflict, targeted attacks by extremist groups, and prolonged instability following the U.S.-led invasion.
Many Christians have sought refuge abroad or relocated to the Kurdistan Region, where conditions are relatively more secure. Despite the challenges, Christian communities continue to play an active role in Iraq’s social and cultural life, with efforts underway to restore churches, schools, and heritage sites across the country.
