Expired meat seized in Baghdad, bran smuggling operation foiled
BAGHDAD — Iraq’s Ministry of Trade on Tuesday announced the seizure and destruction of expired meat being sold in commercial markets in western Baghdad, as well as the interception of a large-scale bran smuggling operation in Baghdad and Salah Al-Din governorates.
According to a ministry statement, regulatory teams in Baghdad, working with security forces and the Ministries of Agriculture and Health, confiscated large quantities of imported expired meat from markets in the Karkh area.
“The confiscated items were destroyed on-site by health authorities to prevent their circulation and sale to citizens,” the ministry said.
In a separate operation, regulatory teams in Salah Al-Din, also in coordination with security forces, foiled an attempt to smuggle a vehicle loaded with large quantities of bran.
“All seized quantities were impounded and legal action was taken against those involved in manipulating the food supply,” the statement added.
