Newborn girl found abandoned between Kirkuk neighborhoods
KIRKUK — A newborn girl was found abandoned late Sunday night between the Domiz and Kobani neighborhoods in Kirkuk and was transferred to the city’s children’s hospital, health officials said.
Muatasem Aziz, an official at Kirkuk Children’s Hospital, told 964media the infant was discovered on a bridge between the two neighborhoods and appeared to be about five to six hours old. A police patrol was notified and arranged for her transport to the hospital.
“The infant was brought to us in poor condition,” Aziz said. “She had been left in the cold for more than half an hour and her body was chilled.” He said the child’s condition has since stabilized after receiving treatment. She has been named Nura.
Aziz noted that most abandoned infants treated at the hospital tend to be girls. This is the second reported case of infant abandonment in Kirkuk this year.
On Feb. 22, a four-day-old infant was found at a landfill in the Qarahanjiri subdistrict and brought to Kirkuk Children’s Hospital, where the child remains in stable condition.
On Saturday, another newborn was discovered near a water project in the Ishaqi subdistrict of Salah Al-Din governorate. The child was transferred to Balad General Hospital by local security forces.
