Three arrested for illegal hunting in Halabja’s Biyara area
HALABJA — The Forest and Environment Police in Halabja have arrested three individuals for illegal hunting in the Biyara area, authorities said Sunday.
The operation was carried out by the Biyara branch of the Forest and Environment Police. Haval Mohammed, media department head at the Halabja Forest and Environment Police, told 964media that after extensive searches in Hawar village, officers apprehended two violators.
Police confiscated two live partridges in cages and two hunting rifles.
Another poacher was arrested in the Tawera area with a live partridge in his possession. Authorities said legal action has been taken against all three individuals, and they have been referred to the judiciary.
The arrests are part of ongoing efforts to crack down on illegal hunting. Earlier this month, environmental police arrested a man in the Kenarwey village of Sharbazher, Sulaymaniyah, for illegally trapping and hunting wild bird.
Under the 2008 Environmental Protection and Improvement Law in the Kurdistan Region, hunting, capturing, or trading endangered species is strictly prohibited. Violators face penalties including up to one month in prison and fines, with harsher consequences for repeat offenders.
