Samarra artist turns to Arabic calligraphy after physics degree

SALAH AL-DIN — After earning a degree in physics, Mohammed Al-Azzawi discovered his true passion in Arabic calligraphy, engraving names and phrases onto handmade wooden and ceramic crafts.

With no immediate job opportunities in his field, he turned his focus to art, launching a home-based business in 2021.

“I am from Samarra, Salah al-Din, and I am 27 years old. I started working in calligraphy on handmade crafts in 2021 after graduating in physics, and I have continued ever since because I did not get a government job,” Al-Azzawi told 964media.

To refine his technique, he studied the work of professional calligraphers online.

“I have worked on developing my craft by studying the works of calligraphers on the internet and learning from their techniques,” he said.

Al-Azzawi now regularly participates in local bazaars and considers them crucial to his business.

“I participate in many bazaars because they are very important for my business, which I run from home,” he said.

Looking ahead, he hopes to expand his brand nationwide.

“I aim, God willing, to grow my project across Iraq and achieve greater success in this field.”

Through his Instagram page, he sells custom-designed cups, incense burners, and medals, each engraved by hand.

“I offer delivery services, and what makes my products special is that they are handmade, not printed,” he said.
