Erbil government declares holiday to mark Kurdish uprising anniversary

ERBIL — The Kurdistan Regional Government has declared Wednesday, March 5, a public holiday across all government institutions to mark the anniversary of the Kurdish uprising.

The annual observance commemorates the uprising against the Baath regime, which began on March 5, 1991, in Ranya with the participation of local residents and the support of the Peshmerga. The revolt quickly spread to cities and towns across the region, culminating in Kirkuk on March 20.

According to the KRG, official working hours will resume on Thursday, March 6, 2025.

Although the 1991 uprising was ultimately quelled by the Baath regime, it proved to be a pivotal moment that was soon followed by establishment of the Kurdistan Region and its autonomous government. On May 19, 1992, the first parliamentary elections were held in Kurdistan, and on July 4, 1992, the first cabinet of the Kurdistan Regional Government was formed, marking the beginning of Kurdish autonomy in Iraq.
