Veteran car washer in Tuz Khurmatu continues work after four decades

TUZ KHURMATU — At age 55, Hawez Khurshid has spent more than four decades washing cars in Tuz Khurmatu, sustaining a livelihood he started as a young man.

Working daily along the bustling main road linking Kirkuk to Baghdad, Khurshid cleans vehicles parked outside restaurants, removing layers of dust and dirt using just water and a cloth. Neither scorching summers nor harsh winters have deterred him from his routine.

Charging between 2,000 and 3,000 IQD ($1-$2) per vehicle, Khurshid maintains pride in his humble profession.

“Thanks to God. It’s honest, clean work, and it helps me provide for my family. People love me, and many customers return to me. I am content with this job,” Khurshid told 964media.

He began washing cars in the 1980s. Many of his former colleagues have since passed away or retired, but Khurshid still works from 6 a.m. until 7 p.m. each day, stationed outside a small restaurant.

The income from his car-washing career has supported his children’s education. Two have graduated from university, and two others are currently studying.

Kawa Suleiman, owner of the restaurant where Khurshid has worked for the past three years, praised him as trustworthy and respected.

“People trust him, and he has never hurt anyone,” Suleiman told 964media. Suleiman added that he charges Khurshid no fee for working in front of his establishment, allowing Khurshid to keep all his earnings.
