Qaragol Bridge in Sulaymaniyah shows signs of wear as safety concerns rise

SULAYMANIYAH — The Qaragol Bridge, connecting Sulaymaniyah and the Garmian administration near the Zarayan subdistrict, is showing signs of structural deterioration, raising safety concerns among drivers and local residents.

Built in 1958, the 67-year-old metal bridge spans key international and local transit routes, including the Parwezkhan crossing. Tens of small and cargo vehicles cross the bridge daily, and heavy traffic has accelerated its wear.

Sattar Rahim, a resident of Qaragol village, told 964media, “The bridge is made of metal, and due to its age, its plates have eroded. Although it has been repaired several times by both the government and locals, constant traffic has worn it down again.”

A driver who frequently uses the road said, “I live in Arbat and use this route daily. The bridge is completely damaged, with no lighting. At night, this creates problems for drivers and increases the risk of traffic incidents.”

Awara Hama Sharif, head of the Zarayan subdistrict, said the bridge was last renovated in 2021. “Since the bridge is made of metal, it requires annual maintenance. Last year, we submitted a request for repairs, but the estimated costs were too high. We have sent another request and are following up with the Ministry of Reconstruction. The ministry has approved the project and forwarded it to the Ministry of Finance, and we are now waiting for the tender process to begin,” he said.
