Wildlife protection measures launched after heavy snowfall in Penjwen

PENJWEN — Heavy snowfall and freezing temperatures in the Penjwen district of Sulaymaniyah have made it difficult for birds to find food, prompting environmental organizations and the forest police to distribute wheat and seeds across several locations to support wildlife survival.

Wrya Ali, a member of the Mlakawa Organization for Environmental Protection, told 964media that the initiative aims to send a message to residents and hunters to prioritize protecting birds rather than hunting them during harsh winter conditions.

Ali called on citizens to show concern for the environment and the welfare of wild birds during this period of cold and snowfall.

Sardar Ahmed, head of Penjwen’s forest police, confirmed to 964media that efforts to protect birds and wildlife will continue, and legal action will be taken against those who hunt them illegally.

“During heavy snowfall, birds and wild animals often gather near roads and populated areas in search of food, making them vulnerable to hunters,” Ahmed said.

Recent snow and rainstorms across the Kurdistan Region have resulted in snowfall exceeding 20 centimeters in Penjwen’s central district.
