'Tribal sensitivities' blamed for slow uptake

Surge in Maysan market thefts spurs call for surveillance cameras

MAYSAN – Thieves are reportedly exploiting the absence of surveillance cameras at the covered market in Al-Qala’a Al-Salih, Maysan, where cameras have not been installed due to tribal sensitivities. Local authorities say a government project to install cameras across the city is expected to be completed within a month.

Ali Haidar, the district’s official (qaymaqam), told 964media that multiple thefts have been reported, prompting shop owners to demand improved security measures, including cameras, better lighting, and nighttime patrols.

“My shop has been stolen from multiple times. Thieves dug a hole in the ceiling to break in,” said Abbas Riyadh, a shop owner.

“We need surveillance cameras, but in our tribal society, we fear installing them. If a dispute happens inside the market, the police demand footage, which could lead to tribal retaliation for providing it,” Riyadh added. He noted that police investigations into the thefts have stalled without camera footage to identify the culprits. “If the government installs cameras, it will be easier to catch the thieves,” he said.

Mohammed Al-Kaabi, a tailor in the market, also reported incidents of theft and urged authorities to enhance security. “Some shops, including mine, have been stolen from. We urge authorities to install surveillance cameras and improve market lighting to protect our property and prevent further incidents,” he said.

Haidar confirmed that local authorities have received multiple complaints about thefts in the area and have deployed police, crime prevention units, and military patrols to address the issue. “The surveillance camera project is a government initiative, not a voluntary effort. It is currently in progress, and cameras are expected to be installed across all streets of Al-Qala’a Al-Salih within a month or less,” he said.
