Farmers in Akre begin spring potato planting amid production surge

AKRE – Farmers in the Akre district have kicked off spring potato planting, primarily in the Nawkur Plain, local agricultural officials said.

The Nawkur Plain, a vital agricultural region in the Kurdistan Region, stretches between the Bardarash and Akre districts.

Fazil Mustafa Rashid, head of Akre’s agriculture department, visited a potato farm in the village of Glena alongside a team of experts. He told 964media that before planting began, officials provided farmers with the guidance needed to ensure a smooth harvest.

“Spring potato planting has begun in some villages of Akre and the Nawkur Plain, but we do not yet know the exact area that will be cultivated this year,” Rashid said.

According to data from the Kurdistan Regional Government’s Media and Information Department, potato production in Duhok Governorate has surged in recent years. The governorate recorded its lowest production at 84,321 tons in 2019, which then increased to 124,783 tons in 2020, 137,156 tons in 2021, and 261,261 tons in 2022. Production jumped to 583,317 tons in 2023 and climbed further to 845,040 tons in 2024.

Duhok is renowned for its diverse agricultural output. In addition to a variety of crops, the governorate supports multiple projects aimed at boosting local production and reducing reliance on imports. A new 5,000-square-meter facility is set to be established to collect and market local agricultural products.
