New nesting sanctuary in Penjwen provides shelter for 500 pigeon pairs
SULAYMANIYAH — A newly built nesting sanctuary in Sulaymaniyah’s Penjwen district is providing space for 500 pairs of pigeons, thanks to an initiative by the Mlakawa Organization and sponsorship from the “Penjwen, City of Learning” project.
Bakhtiyar Ali, a member of the Mlakawa Organization, told 964media that pigeons in Penjwen have long struggled to find safe places to nest, causing their numbers to drop. “Without proper shelters, many pigeons were unable to find safe nesting sites, causing their numbers to decrease. Their eggs often fell and broke, and many hatchlings died,” Ali explained.
He said the head of one of the facilities in Penjwen had contacted the organization for help, noting that the uncontrolled nesting situation was also affecting the facility. In response, the “Penjwen, City of Learning” project provided funding to build a dedicated enclosure on the facility’s exterior, allowing 500 pairs of pigeons to nest securely.
Inside the sanctuary, baskets have been arranged to offer the birds a safe resting space. Food has also been supplied to help them adjust. “Many pigeons have already started using the nests, although it may take until spring for them to fully settle,” Ali said.
Ali emphasized the importance of preserving the local ecosystem. “We need to care for our environment and protect birds and wildlife because our existence is tied to theirs. As long as they and the ecosystem remain healthy, humanity will thrive, and our lives will be more balanced,” he added.
