Basra writers union honors Najah Abdul Ghafour at musical tribute event
BASRA — The Basra Writers and Authors Union, in collaboration with the Basra House of Literature, held a musical tribute on Wednesday honoring renowned composer Najah Abdul Ghafour. The event, attended by local writers and cultural figures, celebrated the artist’s career spanning over 40 years.
During the program, Abdul Ghafour performed several of his compositions, including “Shlonak Eini Shlonak,” originally sung by his late brother Salah Abdul Ghafour. He also performed traditional songs by the late Nazem Al-Ghazali, such as “Ayartni Bilshayb,” which drew strong engagement from the audience.
Artist Mahmoud Abu Al-Abbas told 964media that the event was a well-earned recognition of Abdul Ghafour’s contributions. “Najah Abdul Ghafour is not just a composer but an artist with a career spanning over 40 years. He is a dedicated and self-made musician whose works carry a unique signature. Honoring him is a well-deserved tribute to someone who respects both himself and his artistic legacy,” Abu Al-Abbas said. He noted that Abdul Ghafour’s recent work includes a song dedicated to Basra.
Speaking to 964media, Najah Abdul Ghafour said, “Today, I performed my new song ‘Basratna Al-Helwa,’ written by poet Rashid Kamal, along with other Basrawi folk songs such as ‘Basra Helwa’ and ‘Al-Afandi Eyoni Al-Afandi.’ I also performed Joubi, a song made famous by my late brother, as well as ‘Shlonak Eini Shlonak.'” He revealed that he is working on upcoming projects, including a new song titled “Sharara” and a romantic piece in development.
Furat Saleh, president of the Basra Writers and Authors Union, highlighted the organization’s commitment to nurturing diverse artistic expression. “In addition to weekly literary and cultural sessions, we welcome artists and writers from diverse fields, including music, cinema, and theater,” Saleh said.
