Markets surge ahead of Valentine’s Day in Hamdaniya
NINEVEH — As Valentine’s Day nears, gift shops in Hamdaniya (also known as Bakhdida) in the Nineveh Plains are reporting a significant increase in sales, with high demand for natural roses—some reserved up to a month in advance—according to local gift shop owners.
While fresh flowers remain a favorite, many customers now prefer ready-made gift boxes containing roses. Increasingly, locals are complementing their floral gifts with food items, opting for boxes packed with chocolates, sweets, watches, and perfumes.
Although traditionally a celebration for couples, the holiday has broadened to include singles, who often exchange gifts with family and friends.
Salem Zaki, owner of Onila shop in Hamdaniya, told 964media that customers have been placing orders since last week, mainly for symbolic gifts like roses.
“This year, we prepared special boxes that include roses, chocolates, teddy bears, watches, or perfumes, depending on the customer’s request. Many people ask us to arrange and personalize their gifts,” Zaki said.
With rising gold prices, fewer people are buying gold rings, crosses, or mobile phones, he added, noting that ready-made gift boxes remain the most popular choice. Prices for these boxes range from 5,000 to 100,000 IQD ($3 to $67), depending on the type of gift.
John Hanna, owner of Golden Wings, told 964media that demand for red roses, sweets, and teddy bears is especially high.
“Most orders come through social media. Fub. 14 is extremely busy, so customers book in advance,” Hanna said.
Even some people living abroad are placing orders for their loved ones in the area—whether for a spouse, fiancée, partner, or even parents. “Valentine’s Day is not just for couples but for everyone,” he added.
Hanna noted that securing fresh red roses during this season is challenging because of the surge in demand, with some customers making reservations a week or even a month ahead to ensure they receive the flowers.
Savio Elias, a customer, told 964media that he sees Valentine’s Day as a special occasion for more than just couples.
“It is not only for lovers but also for family and friends. I bought a gift for my mother,” Elias said.
