Gas leak in Darokha neighbourhood leaves eight family members unconscious
SULAYMANIYAH — Eight members of a family lost consciousness after a gas leak from an 11‑kg cylinder caused severe breathing difficulties in a home in Darokha neighbourhood, with one individual requiring hospitalization, local authorities said.
Samal Nader, head of the Sulaymaniyah Emergency Response Center, told 964media that the incident occurred about two hours ago when a gas cylinder leak in the family’s home led to a sudden loss of consciousness. “Our emergency teams responded immediately at the scene and provided necessary first aid inside the house,” Nader said.
According to Nader, four of the affected family members recovered quickly at the scene while the other four needed additional medical attention. One person, who remains in critical condition, was transferred to hospital. He confirmed that the threat has since subsided and that all family members are now in stable condition.
Most households in the Kurdistan Region rely on 11‑kg gas cylinders for cooking. These cylinders are filled at specialized facilities that source liquid gas from local fields, and retailers are mandated to sell them at prices regulated by the government.
Authorities in Sulaymaniyah banned the sale and use of Chinese‑made plastic gas cylinders in October, citing safety concerns after tests revealed an increased risk of explosion.
