Erbil authorities arrest Iranian national attempting to use ‘counterfeit US dollars’ to buy cell phones

ERBIL — Authorities in Erbil arrested an Iranian national accused of trying to buy mobile phones using counterfeit U.S. dollars. The suspect was detained after a cell phone store owner reported the incident to local police.

Karzan Salih, a spokesperson for Erbil police, told 964 media, “The suspect, identified as an Iranian national named with initials A.Y.A., attempted to purchase cell phones from one of the stores using counterfeit dollars. However, the store owner became suspicious, informed us, and the suspect was arrested.”

Salih added, “During the arrest and subsequent investigation, the suspect was found in possession of approximately $2,500 in counterfeit currency, which has been confiscated.”

Captain Salih urged citizens to remain vigilant during financial transactions. “We ask the public to ensure that any money they receive is genuine. In the event of any suspicious cases, please contact the police hotline at 066104,” he said.
