Iraqi counterterrorism forces dismantle ISIS positions in Mosul

MOSUL — Iraqi Counterterrorism Forces have dismantled several Islamic State positions in the desert areas southwest of Mosul, confiscating and destroying various weapons, according to an official statement released Monday night.

The statement detailed that a unit operating in Mosul successfully dismantled multiple ISIS strongholds during the operation. During the mission, the forces seized several mortar rounds, including 120mm and 82mm shells, which were subsequently destroyed.

Authorities confirmed that the targeted areas have been fully secured and brought under control following the operation.

The Islamic State emerged in 2014, controlling major cities like Mosul and Tikrit and declaring a “caliphate.” Known for extreme violence and targeting minorities, the group was militarily defeated in Iraq by 2017 through the efforts of Iraqi forces, Kurdish Peshmerga, and a U.S.-led coalition. However, ISIS remnants continue to persist as an insurgent force, conducting periodic attacks from remote areas.

On Jan. 22, Iraq’s Joint Operations Command reported that three individuals identified as “terrorists,” including a reportedly “important leader,” were killed during a military operation in the Anbar Desert. The operation also led to the destruction of two vehicles.
