Suspected Turkish drone strike in Ranya district kills four, injures one

SULAYMANIYAH — A suspected Turkish drone attack Monday evening struck a vehicle near the village of Girdjan in Sulaymaniyah’s Ranya district, killing four people and critically injuring another, according to local authorities.

Raparin Police spokesperson Daru Qader told 964media, “The injured individual remains in critical condition.” Officials are still working to identify the victims.

Kamaran Osman, a coordinator with the U.S.-based Community Peacemaker Teams–Iraqi Kurdistan, told 964media that two women and two men in the targeted vehicle were killed. He added that the injured person, a motorcyclist, was at the scene when the strike occurred.

With this attack, the death toll from suspected Turkish strikes in the Kurdistan Region rose to six on Monday. Earlier in the day, a married couple was killed in a similar drone strike near Bamashmash village in Duhok’s Akre district, according to local sources.

A 2024 report by Community Peacemaker Teams found that Turkish and Iranian military operations have killed 425 civilians and wounded 420 in the Kurdistan Region since 1991, with Turkey responsible for more than 83% of recorded incidents.

Turkey frequently carries out airstrikes, drone attacks, and ground operations in various parts of the Kurdistan Region, citing the presence of Kurdistan Workers’ Party–or PKK–fighters. The PKK is a Kurdish armed group that has waged a conflict with Turkey since the early 1980s.
