KRG Ministry of Peshmerga Affairs: no official notice of U.S. aid suspension received

ERBIL — The Kurdistan Regional Government’s Ministry of Peshmerga Affairs said Saturday it has not received any official notification regarding the suspension of U.S. military aid.

“Regarding the decision to halt U.S. aid to the Ministry of Peshmerga, we have not received any official notice so far,” Shako Osman, media director for the Peshmerga minister, told 964media.

On Friday, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio ordered an immediate halt to the majority of U.S. foreign aid, including “existing foreign assistance awards.”

Military financing for Israel and Egypt are among the few exemptions.

Osman said that under the memorandum of understanding and agreements between the Ministry of Peshmerga and the U.S. Department of Defense, aid is slated to continue until September 2026. The memorandum, signed in 2022 for a four-year term, covers three main areas of assistance: financial support, logistical aid and arms supplies.

The Peshmerga are the military forces of the Kurdistan Region, tasked with protecting the region and maintaining internal security. Osman noted that the United States and its allies have so far honored their commitments under the agreement.
