Former Basra police employees sentenced to 15 years for embezzlement

BASRA, October 9 — The Basra Criminal Court has issued 15-year sentences for suspects charged with embezzlement of retirement allowances from 2014 and 2015. One of the suspects was identified as the former accounts manager of the Basra Police Directorate.

The Supreme Judicial Council released a statement which said, “The first verdict was issued against three convicts, including the former accounts manager of the Basra Police Directorate, sentencing them to 15 years in prison for embezzling funds related to retirement allowances for the months of February, May, July, September, and November of 2015.”

The statement added: “A second sentence was issued against … individuals, including the former accounts manager of the provincial police, sentencing them to 15 years in prison for the same crime for the months of January, February, June, July, August, and November of 2014.”

The judgments were issued in accordance with provisions of Article 315 of the Penal Code No. 111 of 1969 as amended, and under the provisions of Articles 47, 48, and 49 of the same law.
