Peshmerga ministry tightens social media rules, bans uniform misuse

ERBIL — The Ministry of Peshmerga has issued new regulations aimed at boosting discipline and curbing social media misuse by its personnel. Under Order No. 60, dated Jan. 6, 2025, the directives prohibit the improper display of military uniforms online, unregulated social media activity, and any behavior deemed harmful to the force’s reputation.

“All forms of social media posts or displays involving officers, commanders, or Peshmerga personnel in military uniforms in ways that harm the dignity or reputation of the force are prohibited,” the ministry said. “This includes any activity in military bases or barracks that could undermine the honor of the Peshmerga.”

The regulations caution against “inappropriate comments, posts, or unsuitable images,” warning that violators will be referred to military courts and face strict disciplinary action. The General Directorate of Public Relations and Information has been tasked with ensuring compliance and continuous oversight.

Addressing concerns about fake accounts and impersonations, the ministry said it will coordinate with security agencies to investigate unauthorized or fraudulent social media pages that misuse the name of the Peshmerga or its commanders. “If military personnel are involved, they will face disciplinary action according to military law. Civilians will be referred to the legal system through the ministry’s legal channels,” officials said.

The ministry underscored the importance of these measures in preserving the integrity and professionalism of the Peshmerga, adding that violations will be met with strict accountability to maintain high standards across the force.
