Karbala’s newly opened seafood spot introduces locals to Basra’s marine cuisine

KARBALA — In a city traditionally known for its freshwater fish dishes, Al-Qubtan seafood restaurant in Karbala is introducing locals to the flavors of Basra’s marine cuisine.

Speaking to 964media, restaurant owner Ghaith Al-Hasnawi said, “After traveling to several countries, I decided to open a seafood restaurant in Karbala, offering local families a unique experience beyond the familiar taste of river fish.”

Al-Qubtan restaurant specializes in fresh seafood sourced directly from fishermen in Al-Faw, Basra, without relying on imported fish.

“Since the restaurant opened a few days ago, customers have been impressed with our dishes, and we do not use Iranian or frozen fish,” Al-Hasnawi added.

The restaurant offers 25 dishes, including fried and grilled seafood. Popular menu items include shrimp with cream sauce, jumbo grilled shrimp and seafood stew.

The restaurant also serves traditional Middle Eastern dishes, such as grilled chicken, fish cooked in a clay oven and rice with fish stew. Prices for seafood dishes range between 9,000 and 25,000 IQD ($6 to $17).

“I was surprised by the strong response from Karbala’s families; I initially expected more interest from younger customers,” Al-Hasnawi said.
