Volunteer campaign revitalizes the historic waterwheels of Hit
ANBAR — A three-day volunteer cleaning and maintenance campaign at the historic Waterwheels of Hit, locally known as Nawaeer Park, has successfully concluded. The initiative, led by Ayadi Al-Rahma Organization and funded by the United States Agency for International Development, involved local activists and members of the Youth Ambassadors Program.
The campaign focused on cleaning the iconic site and its corniche, repairing lighting systems, refurbishing restroom facilities, and restoring walkways & seating areas.
Hassan Hamed, the campaign leader, told 964media, “The initiative lasted for three days and included cleaning and repairing public facilities at the Waterwheels in southern Hit.”
He emphasized the collaborative effort, stating, “Volunteer teams, including Youth Ambassadors, local organizations, and a group of young residents, worked together to restore and clean this historic site.”
Hamed highlighted the importance of the initiative, saying, “This campaign is significant because the Waterwheels of Hit are a vital tourist landmark and cultural symbol of the city. They deserve consistent care and attention.” He expressed gratitude to Ayadi Al-Rahma and USAID for their support, noting their commitment to preserving the heritage and tourism potential of the site.
Civil activist Mustafa Saadoun elaborated on the project’s objectives, saying, “USAID funded this project, executed by Ayadi Al-Rahma. A group of local youth was selected to represent the community and address pressing needs, including fixing lighting systems, cleaning restrooms, and launching other initiatives that address community challenges.”.
He added, “The initiative focused on three key areas: rehabilitating restroom facilities, repairing and upgrading lighting systems for the waterwheels, and conducting an extensive cleaning campaign for the site and the surrounding corniche.”
