Red roses in demand

Basra’s first Christmas market becomes a festive family destination

BASRA — The first Christmas Market Festival in Al-Maqal, Basra, has transformed into a prime destination for families from across Basra and beyond. On its fourth day, the festival attracted large crowds who enjoyed a variety of activities, competitions, and the opportunity to purchase Christmas and New Year’s gifts.

The event, highlighted by vibrant red decorations, Christmas music, and entertaining contests, offered a festive experience for attendees. Santa Claus strolled among children and families, adding to the joyous atmosphere. The number of participating vendors has increased due to significant media coverage and widespread promotion, contributing to the festival’s appeal.

This marks the first time Basra has celebrated Christmas on such a large scale. Al-Maqal, a historic city located along the Shatt Al-Arab, is home to Iraq’s oldest ports, railway, and airport.

Fayrouz Ali, a florist and participant in the festival, told 964media, “We are here as part of Milwani, our flower arrangement business. This festival is the first of its kind in Basra, and the public response has been good.”

She continued, “The atmosphere is beautiful, and we’ve enjoyed it. Our sales are good, with the most popular item being red roses, often bought by young men for their wives or girlfriends. With word spreading about the event, more people are attending every day.”

Maryam Mahdi, one of the attendees, shared, “I visited during the preparation phase, and once it was completed, the place looked stunning. I can see the joy on people’s faces. The market is beautiful, and the carefully selected stalls add a unique charm.”

Khadija Hamid, a visitor from Dhi Qar province and an employee at the Directorate of Electricity, said, “I came to Basra on a work assignment and heard about this festival. It’s wonderful, and the people of Basra are amazing. The city itself is stunning, and the atmosphere here is enchanting. I visited the coastline, Algeria Street, and other entertainment spots, which reflect Basra’s unique character that sets it apart from other cities.”
