'Meow Show’
Kirkuk event hosts over 190 cats for feline festivities
KIRKUK — Cat lovers gathered in Kirkuk for the first-ever “Meow Show,” a festival celebrating feline charm. More than 190 cats competed for the top prize in a unique event organized under the supervision of veterinarians and pet care specialists. The competition included a red-carpet walk where cats were judged on criteria such as breed, cleanliness, and weight, as well as creativity in their names. Organizers have promised a similar event for popular dog breeds in the near future.
“I am an international cat breeder with 12 cats in my home,” said participant Qusay Hussein, who entered his British shorthair cats into the competition. “My participation isn’t about winning a prize; it’s about spreading the culture of pet care and discouraging violence toward animals. Kindness toward animals changes human nature, fostering relationships built on compassion and harmony.”.
For many participants, the festival wasn’t just about the competition but also about celebrating the joy pets bring to their lives.
“My cat helps me expel negative energy and keeps me entertained,” said contestant Malak Mohammed. “I registered for the event through the festival’s link, and it’s been an amazing experience. My Persian cat, Bella, won the award for ‘Best Cat Name.’ I highly recommend people to adopt and care for pets.”
Zainab Safaa, who won the title of “Most Beautiful Cat” for her feline companion Kifousha, shared a heartfelt story of her bond with her pet. “After a recent surgery, I saved the money I received as gifts from my family and used it to buy Kifousha, even though my mother was initially against keeping a cat at home. Now, Kifousha is my best friend and goes everywhere with me. I urge everyone not to harm cats or animals in general.”
Dr. Darsim Nawzad, the head of the judging panel, emphasized the event’s importance in fostering awareness about pet care. “This festival is being held for the first time in Kirkuk, sponsored by Kirkuk Mall and the Himalaya Pet Center,” he said. “We aim to make this an annual event, gathering people to spread awareness about caring for pets. We also plan to expand the competition to include dogs, as they are very popular with people.”
Nawzad explained the selection process: “The awards, including ‘Most Beautiful Cat’ and ‘Best Cat Name,’ judged based on the cat’s breed, cleanliness, and weight.”
Participants praised the festival’s positive atmosphere and unique approach to promoting animal welfare. “Taking care of animals isn’t hard,” said participant Fatima Jassim.
“This festival is wonderful, and I hope it continues. Having a cat at home brings so much positive energy because they’re such gentle creatures that ease fear and anxiety.”
