'Messages of love and tolerance'
Basra celebrates coming of Christmas with charity bazaar
BASRA — The city of Basra adorned itself for Christmas in a festive cheer today, hosting a charity bazaar near the Church of St. Teresa in Al-Baradhiyah. Organized by the Samaritan Fellowship, the event aimed to collect donations for cancer patients and for children with disabilities, drawing wide participation from across the community.
Bishop Habib Al-Noufaly, head of the Diocese of Basra and the Arabian Gulf, told 964media, “As we approach the Christmas season, we aim to spread messages of love and tolerance among everyone. This event reflects the humanitarian spirit and values of cooperation and solidarity in our society.”
He added, “This is the ninth year of the bazaar, and its goal is to raise funds for children battling cancer and for disabled children in Baghdad cared for by the Sisters of St. Teresa. It highlights the importance of collective efforts to support those in need during this joyous season.”
Community members shared their thoughts. Mona Saher, a Christian resident, said, “The bazaar is held annually during Christmas to commemorate the birth of Christ. It is open to all sects, not just Christians. This year, 2024, as wars continue in many Arab countries, we pray for patience and hope that the new year brings peace and stability.”
Naeel Sako, a member of Basra’s Provincial Council, emphasized, “There is a historic coexistence in Basra and across other provinces among Christians, Muslims, Mandaeans, and others. This harmony is evident in events like this.”
Fatima Wissam, a local resident, added, “All groups participate in this bazaar, not just Christians. We love and support our Christian brothers and are proud of their presence in Basra.”
