Residents blame local factories and garbage sites

Basmaya City residents demand action against persistent smoke and pollution

BAGHDAD, October 2 — The Basmaya residential complex located in eastern Baghdad has been engulfed by smoke and the smell of sulfur gas in recent days, prompting calls from local for a swift resolution.

Residents claim the smoke and gas is coming from nearby factories and trash incineration sites.

Rafat Al-Atabi, a representative for the Basmaya complex, told 964: “This has been the situation in Basmaya for days now, with toxic, sulfur-smelling smoke covering the city. We hope for a quick solution to this disaster.”

Resident Ali Azat said: “The smell of sulfur and the smoke from the factories engulf the city daily, and this means health problems and possibly even cancer if the situation continues as it is.”

Fellow resident Maisarah Adnan said: “It’s not just the smoke from the factories, but also the burning of waste and its direct impact on Basmaya and the surrounding areas. We suffer from this situation daily, and our pleas to the authorities have been unanswered.”
