'Legal procedures' underway
70 foreign nationals arrested in Baghdad for residency violations
BAGHDAD — Rusafa Police arrested 70 foreign nationals on Monday during a security operation on Al-Dhilal Street for violating residency regulations.
“A force from the Rusafa Police Command carried out a swift security operation on Al-Dhilal Street to apprehend wanted individuals and violators. The police successfully achieved their objectives, apprehending 70 individuals of various nationalities. All detainees have been placed in custody, and legal procedures are underway,” the Rusafa police detailed in a statement.
A week ago, Iraq’s Minister of Interior, Abdul Amir Al-Shammari, reiterated the government’s dedication to deporting individuals who violate residency laws. He also highlighted efforts to simplify procedures for foreign workers aiming to comply with legal requirements.
Iraq hosts an estimated one million foreign workers, though only 71,000 are officially registered with work contracts, according to the Ministry of Labor. Foreign labor in the country is regulated under Labor Law No. 37 of 2015 and the Foreigners’ Residence Law No. 118 of 1978, which mandate permits, valid passports, and entry visas. Non-compliance can result in fines of up to $500 and deportation.
