Basra farmer transforms abandoned land into desert family resort
BASRA — Some tomato farmers in Zubair, west of Basra, have abandoned their farms due to challenges in marketing their crops and low profitability. However, Karrar Al-Harz has repurposed a three-dunum plot in the desert area of Al-Quraytiyat, near the Kuwaiti border, into a desert resort and rest area. The project aims to attract Basra families who enjoy desert outings and hunting enthusiasts.
The resort, which is 90% complete, features security measures and various amenities, including children’s play areas, seasonal swimming pools, an outdoor cycling track, a football field, and fully furnished chalets. Al-Harz plans to open the facility soon in coordination with local security and tourism authorities.
“I believe the success rate will be high due to cooperation with security and cultural authorities, in coordination with Basra’s security forces and tourism department,” Al-Harz told 964media.
He added that additional greenery, lighting, furniture, and other amenities are required to make the resort fully operational for families in Basra.
The resort spans 110 meters in length and 55 meters in width, with a swimming pool area of 5×5 meters. It also provides parking for up to 21 cars. Al-Harz said the concept caters to families looking for green spaces for desert outings and camping.
In addition to families, the facility is designed for young people interested in bird raising and hunting. Al-Harz incorporated traditional and modern seating, sports facilities, and a cycling track to create a safe and diverse recreational space.
The land, previously used to grow tomatoes, cucumbers, and melons, belonged to Al-Harz’s uncle but was abandoned due to insufficient government support and low profits. Al-Harz proposed the tourism project as an alternative use for the property.
Describing the resort as a “desert tourism experience,” Al-Harz emphasized its purpose as a secure, well-equipped space for families and children to escape the noise and busyness of city life.
