Environmental campaign launched to support wildlife in snowy Soran region
SORAN — An environmental initiative commenced to provide food and seeds for wildlife in the mountainous areas of Soran Independent Administration which is located in Erbil governorate, aiming to support animals during heavy snowfall.
The campaign, led by the Soran Environmental Department, included participation from environmental organizations such as the Waar Organization for Nature Conservation and Waramar for Environmental Protection.
Hazhar Mahir, head of the Soran Environmental Department, told 964media that snowfall limits animals’ access to food, prompting the need for this initiative.
“Today, we went to Mount Kokha in the Balakayati area to provide food and grain, and next week we plan to supply the Bradost and Barzan mountains,” Mahir said.
During snowfall, wildlife often moves closer to inhabited areas as snow covers their natural food sources. Mahir noted that this behavior makes animals more vulnerable.
“In such times, animals become easier targets; therefore, our efforts aim to provide them with food and keep them away from human settlements,” he added.
Mahir emphasized that similar campaigns have been conducted in previous years, especially during heavy snowfall, and that these efforts will continue in the future.
The Balakayati region, known for its rich biodiversity, has faced challenges due to a lack of environmental police, leading to increased environmental violations. The picturesque landscape attracts many visitors annually, further emphasizing the need for robust environmental protection.
In response to these challenges, organizations like Leopards Beyond Borders have proposed the creation of ranger forces or “Nature Peshmerga” to safeguard the region’s wildlife and natural resources.
