Red Crescent appoints Falah Hassan Al-Shukri as first branch head with a disability

NAJAF — The Iraqi Red Crescent Society in Al-Mishkhab, Najaf governorate, has appointed 30-year-old Falah Hassan Al-Shukri as its branch head, marking the first time a person with a disability has held this position. Al-Shukri’s appointment comes after 12 years of dedicated service to the organization.

Born with a congenital disability, Al-Shukri has become a prominent community activist and an advocate for integrating people with disabilities into public roles. A graduate in financial and banking sciences from the Faculty of Management and Economics, Al-Shukri began his journey with the Red Crescent in 2012 as a coordinator in the media and publication unit.

“My disability did not hinder my ambition to reach high positions,” Al-Shukri told 964media. He highlighted his achievements within the organization, including contributions to humanitarian law, and expressed gratitude for the ongoing support he receives from colleagues. Al-Shukri said his appointment sets a precedent for greater inclusion of individuals with disabilities in leadership roles.

“People with disabilities should be supported and given the opportunity to prove their capabilities in government work. They strive for creativity and excellence, and with limited options available, they deliver performance that often exceeds expectations,” Al-Shukri added.

Hassan Taher, Director of the Red Crescent in Najaf, emphasized that Al-Shukri’s selection was based on merit. “We do not consider disability status when appointing leadership positions,” Taher said, noting Al-Shukri’s experience, youth, and leadership skills.

“Young Falah Hassan was nominated for the position of director of the Al-Mishkhab office based on his high competence and strong commitment to his work. He has demonstrated youthful energy, exceptional leadership abilities, a positive impact on the community, and diverse skills, along with his support for the most vulnerable groups. His nomination was approved by the central office,” Taher added.
