Café Chayi Khana in Fallujah offers a blend of culture, history and coffee
ANBAR — In the heart of Fallujah’s 40th Street, Café Chayi Khana offers a unique cultural experience, setting itself apart from other cafés in the city. Owned by Abdul Quddus Hameed, the café has become a hub of heritage, featuring a rich display of antiques, photographs, and models that highlight Iraq’s prominent figures, both past and present.
The café showcases historical images of figures such as former Prime Minister Nuri al-Said, tribal sheikhs, and religious leaders like Shia Grand Ayatollah Ali Al-Sistani. The walls are also adorned with traditional Iraqi proverbs, and mid-century posters of ads for laundry detergent, further contributing to the cultural atmosphere.
Hameed told 964media that, “It’s not just a regular café; it features handmade crafts and traditional items, including dolls dressed in Iraqi heritage clothing. We’ve also displayed images of prominent Iraqi and global figures, such as former Iraqi presidents and other influential people.”
Established in early 2023, Café Chayi Khana regularly hosts artistic sessions, with traditional maqam performances—a system of melodic modes central to Middle Eastern music, known for its complex rules for composition and improvisation.
Farouq Nawwaf, Head of the Anbar Artists’ Union and a member of the Iraqi Heritage Preservation Association, said, “We have submitted a request to officially recognize this place as a heritage café. It truly deserves the designation.”
The café’s blend of cultural history and vibrant artistic performances has made it a popular destination for intellectuals, journalists, tribal sheikhs, and community leaders, further cementing its role as a cultural meeting point in Fallujah.
