'Strikes will continue'
Islamic Resistance in Iraq claims second drone strike on Golan Heights, vows escalatation
BAGHDAD – The Islamic Resistance in Iraq, a coalition of Iranian-backed Shiite militias, claimed responsibility on Sunday for a second drone strike on a strategic location in the occupied Golan Heights. The strike was a direct response to ongoing Israeli military actions in Palestine and Lebanon, which the group condemned as “massacres against civilians, including children, women, and the elderly.”
“In support of our brothers in Palestine and Lebanon, and as part of our continued resistance to occupation, Islamic Resistance fighters in Iraq have launched a second drone attack on a key target in the occupied Golan,” the group said in a statement. They also pledged to intensify operations, adding, “The resistance confirms that these strikes will continue with increasing intensity.”
The Golan Heights, a strategically important plateau in southwestern Syria, was captured by Israel during the 1967 Six-Day War.
The Islamic Resistance in Iraq, part of the broader Axis of Resistance which includes Hezbollah and other militias, has conducted multiple drone strikes against Israeli targets. Earlier this month, the group claimed responsibility for strikes in the Golan Heights and Tiberias, reportedly resulting in the deaths of Israeli soldiers and injuries to others .
Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ Al-Sudani and senior officials in Iraq have urged caution, warning against Iraq’s involvement in a wider regional conflict. On October 6, Al-Sudani called for international intervention to prevent further escalation, saying, “Our government has worked hard to shield Iraq from the effects of this escalation.” National Security Advisor Qasim Al-Araji distanced the government from remarks by Kata’ib Hezbollah spokesperson Abu Ali Al-Askari, clarifying that his calls for an “energy war” against Israel and the U.S. reflect personal views, not the official stance of the Iraqi government. Government spokesperson Basim Al-Awadi reaffirmed Iraq’s commitment to non-military solutions.
