Al-Husseiniya sweet shop celebrated for 14 years of Znood Al-Sit and baklava

BAGHDAD — Al-Husseiniya area in Baghdad takes pride in its version of “Znood Al-Sit,” which has been a staple of the community for 14 years. The shop is well-known for its range of confectionaries, including baklava, Burma, Znood Al-Sit, and various types of kunafa.

Znood Al-Sit is a traditional Middle Eastern dessert, particularly popular in Iraq, Lebanon, and other parts of the Levant. It consists of layers of dough stuffed with sweet cream, fried to golden perfection, and soaked in syrup, making it a beloved treat.

For more than a decade, the shop’s staff, who are all relatives, have maintained the distinctive taste of Al-Hamdani’s sweets. This consistency has earned the shop the nickname “The Number One of Al-Husseiniya” among locals.

Hashem Basim, the owner of the sweets shop, explained to 964media that all their products are made with pure ghee, pistachios, and other high-quality ingredients. “We have been working together for 14 years, offering a flavor that lingers in memory,” he stated.

The shop also has special offers for different occasions. For instance, the price of a Znood Al-Sit tray is typically 65,000 dinars ($43), but during special events, it is sold for 45,000 dinars ($30). Baklava and Burma are priced at 20,000 dinars ($13) per kilogram.

Baklava, a sweet pastry made from layers of thin phyllo dough filled with chopped nuts, and Burma, a twisted variation of baklava, are both highly popular in the Middle East. The shop’s use of pure ingredients has kept customers returning for years.

“From day one, we’ve kept the reputation and flavor intact, and families from all over Al-Husseiniya come to us for this,” Hashem added.

Longtime customer Mohammed Faisal praised the shop’s cleanliness, the courteousness of the staff, and the quality of the sweets. “The shop is known for the cleanliness of its products, the polite manners of its staff, and the excellent taste. We’ve been buying sweets from here for years. Their prices are very reasonable, and they are the best in the area,” he said.
