A new space for discussions in Mosul

Mosul Talks initiative promotes social dialogue and language skills

MOSUL, September 20 — Mu’min Mohannad brings together youth in Mosul who are interested in languages and engaging in discussions on social issues. The conversations happen in English, with the goal of developing participants’ language skills in a group known as “Mosul Talks.” This innovative initiative seeks unconventional methods to master the English language.

The Mosul Talks group is a unique project that welcomes any young person who wishes to join. Founded just a month ago, the group holds sessions every two weeks, with an average of 60 participants, including both young men and women.

Mohannad, the Founder of Mosul Talks, graduated at the top of his class in the Translation Department at the University of Mosul. He said the idea behind the group was to give young people a space to talk about subjects that affect their personal lives, but in English.

“Language has become incredibly important in today’s world, with diverse applications in daily life, such as job applications with international organizations or companies, as well as studying abroad,” he said. “For example, there is increasing interest in tourism in Mosul, so there is a need for translators to accompany tourists. Additionally, we need to prepare speakers who can represent Mosul on international stages.”

Mohannad got the idea for Mosul Talks after working as a dialogue facilitator with the University of Pennsylvania. “I wanted to bring this pioneering idea to the Mosul community specifically. I selected topics that directly affect the lives of young men and women,” he added.

Hasan Hadi is an English teacher and member of the group. “Language practice is essential, and this requires a community with shared culture, ideas, and goals. This is what we provide here,” he shared.

Noor Sabah, another participant, said: “This phenomenon is a step forward for the Mosul community. It provides an environment to explore new ideas, express them, and see others’ perspectives, which I find very rewarding.”

“The gatherings create numerous opportunities for networking, in addition to offering avenues for employment or scholarships abroad. Moreover, it’s the perfect environment for language practice, ” Sabah added.
