Former Hilla municipality director sentenced to two years

BABIL — Iraq’s Integrity Commission announced Wednesday that the Hilla Misdemeanor Court sentenced Hussein Ali Jassim, the former Director of the Hilla Municipality, to two years in prison in absentia for deliberately violating his official duties.

Full statement from the commission:

The Federal Integrity Commission announced the issuance of an in-absentia verdict sentencing the former Director of the Hilla Municipality to two years in prison for deliberately violating his official duties.

The Office of Media and Government Communications indicated that the Hilla Misdemeanor Court issued an in-absentia verdict sentencing Hussein Ali Jassim, the former Director of the Hilla Municipality, to two years of severe imprisonment for deliberately violating his official duties. This violation involved failing to remove encroachments on both sides of the Al-Yahudiyya River and the green belt of the Al-Jam’iya neighborhood and continuing to enter into new contracts or renew old ones for the green belt, contrary to current regulations and instructions, intending to benefit an individual at the state’s expense.

The office added that the court reached a full conviction of the defendant’s guilt after reviewing the evidence and proofs obtained in the case. Consequently, it decided to convict him and sentence him in absentia to severe imprisonment under Article 331 of the Penal Code.

The decision included issuing an arrest and search warrant against the convict and placing a provisional seizure on his movable and immovable assets. It also granted the affected party, the Hilla Municipality Directorate, the right to pursue civil court proceedings to seek compensation once the decision becomes final.
